Day 3 of the 3 Gorges Cruise marks the actual visit to the famous Three Gorges. At around 7:00, the boat should arrive at the spectacular Qutang Gorge, the shortest (8km) and the narrowest amongst the gorges, surrounded by breathtakingly high peaks over 1200 metres (3900 feet) high. The entrance to the gorge, nicknamed Kuimen, used to be considered as the most dangerous pass in the world. Along the cliffside, the remains of a particularly narrow old towpath (used in ancient times) can be seen.

7:20: international buffet breakfast is served at the Dynasty Dining Room.

The passage through the second gorge should begin at around 9:00 AM. The Wu Gorge, the deepest of the three, stretches over around 40km (25 miles) and is bordered by 12 majestic peaks.

11:00-15:00 Cruising Shennong Stream. Disembark from the ship at Badong, boarding a ferry for the transfer to a local longboat (sampan). The scenery here is unrivalled anywhere along the middle course of the river, boasting crystalline waters, rich forest, and towering rock formations. The Shennong region is home to several species of endangered flora and fauna, including the elusive Golden Hair Monkey and many varieties of medicinal plants.

This is also the perfect opportunity to see “Cliff Coffins”, an ancient practice attributed to the Bo people, cousins of the Tujia.

16:30-17:30: Complimentary coffee, tea & Pastries are served - Explorer Bar, Deck 6

18:00: Passing Xiling Gorge with commentary - Explorer Deck, Deck 6

During the final activities, the boat will enter into the west part of the Xiling Gorge, the final and longest gorge (around 80km/50 miles). During the journey, appreciate the Huangting Temple, built during the period of the Three Kingdoms.

07:30-13:00: Disembark the ship and take the shore experience to pass through Ship Lift and then visit the Three Gorges Dam, a gigantic project that began in 1994 and was finished in 2009. The dam splits the Xiling Gorge in two, is 2.3km (1.5 miles) in length, over 185 metres (600 feet) high, 18 metres (60ft) wide at the top and 130 metres (425ft) at the base… creating an immense reservoir over 600km (370 miles) in length! The “world’s biggest barrage” currently generates a massive quantity of hydroelectricity (more than 2 million watts), which accounts for around 10% of China’s total capacity.
