Itinerary

1

Guilin / Longsheng

This Guilin mountain adventure begins with a transfer from Guilin (arrival point) to the Longsheng rice terrace region. About 85 km away, this stunning natural landscape is bound to steal hearts before guests even arrive to Longsheng. The first stop on the tour will be to the Huangluo Yao village, home to the Red Yao minority. One of the many branches of China’s ethnic minorities, the Yao women are specifically known for their exceedingly long black hair. Tradition states that the Yao women shouldn’t cut their hair until marriage (around age 16), at which point the grandmother cuts the hair, saves it, and gifts it to the family of the future husband. Competitions often take place in the region to honour the woman with the longest hair, which most recently measured in at 1.75 meters! Enjoy a leisurely walk through the village.

Continue the visit 20 kilometers away to the village of Ping’an. Tucked down a winding, serpentine road, this 600-year-old village takes around 40 minutes to reach. Populated by the Zhuang minority (China’s largest), this ethnic group is known for their passion about song and theatre.

Note: Shows can be arranged for visitors, though we highly discourage attending

For some great vantage points of the Longsheng rice terraces, a moderate walk (30 minutes) to the highest region in the village is possible (time depends on location and choice of accommodation). Local porters are happy to carry in personal belongings.

Overnight in Ping’an

Please noted: For this evening, bring only a small bag with essentials for one night. Large luggage will be kept by the driver in the car.

2

Longsheng / Guilin

Spend the morning and noon hours with an approximate four hour walk along the “Dragon’s Backbone”- one of the most beautiful stretches of the Longsheng rice terraces in the Guilin mountains (and arguably in the entire country!) Walk time is contingent on both personal pace and how many stops are taken for photographs. Appearing similar to a massive, undulating staircase, these tiered rice paddies house villages of the Dong, Miao, Yao, and Zhuang minorities. Start to take a walk from Ping’an Village to the Ancient Zhuang Village and then heading back. (Both offering stunning panoramas of the surrounding area.)

Option1:  If there is a further interest of hiking with more challenge, another route of 4 hours hiking (one way) from Ping’an Village to Dazhai Village, passing by Zhongliu and Tiantouzhai, can be a choice.

Option2: If 4 hours walking takes too much strength, there is a possibility of getting down the hill from Ancient Zhuang Village, and being transferred back to the entrance before walking back to hotel in Ping’an Village.

Note: Because the Guilin Mountains call for wet rice cultivation, the colors and experiences of the Longsheng rice terraces change with the seasons. From May through August, terrace water shimmers in the fields, reflecting like a million tiny mirrors. In September, the fields are a lush green color, slowly developing into wheat browns until the harvest of October. Visiting is not advised between December-March, when snow and fog can spoil the spectacle.

After the day’s explorations through the region, transfer back to Guilin.
