Bangkok Arrival

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport – Capella Bangkok (36.4 km): 35 min

Arrive at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and meet a representative who will fast-track the immigration procedure. Be assisted with luggage and introduced to the guide. Hop in the air-conditioned VIP Ventury and transfer to Capella Bangkok. On the way, listen to the guide who will provide information on the rich history and Thai culture of Bangkok.

Overnight at Capella Bangkok.

Breakfast at the hotel.

Travel away from Bangkok’s city centre for a visit to local markets and countryside neighbourhoods. Take a one-hour drive, leaving the high-rise buildings behind and entering a land of lush landscapes and traditional wooden houses.

Stop at a local railway station where a bustling country market has sprouted up along the tracks. As a train pulls into the station, witness the vendors quickly clearing their stalls off the railway. Then, after the train departs, watch them set up shop and resume business as usual.

From here, continue to the famous Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Although these days the stalls are mostly selling items for tourists, the Damnoen Saduak remains the best example of a traditional floating market. Take a stroll around and admire the floating shops, many of which are selling fresh fruits and typical Thai snacks. For visits falling on a Saturday or Sunday, there is an option to visit the less touristy floating market Tha Kha.

Leave the main market area and take a relaxing paddle boat ride. Pass by an old section of the floating market and enter a labyrinth of quiet canals. See houses built alongside the waterways and catch glimpses of local life in this rural Thai province.

Following this insightful exploration of the countryside, return to Bangkok’s modern city centre.

Spend the afternoon free at leisure.

Overnight at Capella Bangkok.

Visit the teakwood Observation Car to enjoy spectacular open views of the sun setting over the lush landscapes. Return to the cabin to dress for dinner before taking a seat in one of the sumptuous Restaurant Cars. Indulge in a gastronomic feast of eastern and western specialties, expertly prepared by our onboard chefs. Afterwards, choose to enjoy a convivial nightcap in the Bar Car while being entertained by the resident pianist. Retire to your cabin, which has been converted into a cosy bedroom by your steward.

As morning breaks in rural Kanchanaburi Province, breakfast is served in your cabin. Later, the train arrives at River Kwai Station. Disembark to the chosen excursion.

1. Classic Tour

Cruise along the Khwae Yai River aboard a local raft, taking in views of the splendid Thai teakwood houses along the banks. Get an insight into the building of the infamous railway and bridge, which were constructed by allied prisoners in World War II. After the cruise, board a minivan to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre and perhaps pay a visit to the Don Rak War Cemetery before returning to the train.

2. Tracks to Unseen Thailand Tour

Board a private minivan to rural Nong Kao village for the hour-long bicycle tour. Cycle through the verdant rice fields, stopping for a fascinating demonstration at a local Thai farm and refreshments. Return to the Traditional Thai Wooden House for a relaxing herbal infusion before returning to the train.

3. Local Flavours Tour

This guided tour begins with visits to a vibrant wet market and an acclaimed rice noodle house to get an insight into the traditional processes used. Proceed to Wat Nue Pier to board a river raft and participate in a traditional Thai cooking class on board while sailing along the River Kwai. Disembark at Chong Kai War Cemetery for an optional visit before returning to the train.

Back on board, a leisurely afternoon awaits. Take time to relax and recharge the batteries before preparing for a sumptuous dinner, preceded perhaps by one of the enticing signature cocktails in the Bar Car.

Kuala Kangsar – Kuala Lumpur

Private Transfer from Train Station to Hotel in Kuala Lumpur (40KM): 50 mins

Indulge in a lie-in before breakfast in the cabin as the Eastern & Oriental Express enters Malaysia. Notice the landscape change as limestone massifs rear up dramatically from the rice fields. Spend the morning relaxing in the Observation Car or Saloon Car, reading, chatting with fellow guests or simply gazing at the passing scenery.

After lunch, arrive in Kuala Kangsar and alight to board a coach. Travel away from the city to Labu Kubong, a village set among the paddy fields and backed by lush mountains. Here, embark on a traditional village experience, a chance to immerse in rural Malaysian life. Be welcomed by the villagers with a traditional martial arts dance before sampling regional food and drinks and browsing locally produced handicrafts. Enjoy a guided walk through the rice paddies to learn about the process of planting and harvesting before heading to a plantation where rubber, banana and durian are grown. The tour finishes with refreshments that include banana and durian chips produced from the plantation crops.

Alternatively, advanced trekkers may wish to join an optional hill trek. The trek begins with a visit to a banana and durian plantation before joining the guide—an expert naturalist—to climb to the peak of the nearby hill. Cold towels and refreshments await at the top, following the challenging walk, take-in the breathtaking panoramic views over the village and plantations. Peer through the binoculars provided and catch a glimpse of the train waiting at nearby Padang Rengas Station. Please note, this excursion is recommended for advanced walkers only. It is recommended to wear comfortable and sturdy walking shoes for both excursions.

Both of the Labu Kubong options are weather permitting. In inclement weather, enjoy a guided tour of Kuala Kangsar instead. Be led on a journey through the fascinating royal town, taking in such sights as the majestic Ubudiah Mosque and the treasure-filled Sultan Shah Gallery.

After the excursion, rejoin the train as it continues south through the lush rainforests and rural west-coast towns of Peninsular Malaysia. Prepare for a gastronomic dinner before arriving into Kuala Lumpur Station late this evening.

Please note: Eastern & Oriental Express operates within the constraints of the railway network. As such timings, routes and associated itineraries are therefore subject to change.

On arrival, be met and greeted at the train station by the guide for a private transfer to the hotel.

After checking-in to the hotel, relax at the hotel or explore Kuala Lumpur independently.
