Bangkok – arrival

Transfer from airport to Bangkok hotel: 55 mins.

Welcome to Bangkok! On arrival, be met by the guide and be transferred to the hotel.  Dinner will be spent at leisure today.

Bangkok - Sightseeing

Today’s tour will begin at 08:00. Look beyond the crowded streets of the metropolis and discover a more local side of Bangkok. Take advantage of the city’s network of public transportation for a full day excursion of the capital. See the main iconic sites but also take a closer look at the traditions and lifestyles of the Thai people.

Then the day’s adventure begins with a ride on the city’s skytrain. The skytrain is often busy during peak hours as it is the preferred mode of transport for office workers and school children who try to avoid traffic jams. Disembark near the Chao Phraya River and board a public boat, another popular option for commuting. Enjoy the views of the city’s skyline while cruising down the river. Observe  houses precariously balanced on stilts along the river’s edge.

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

The boat stops near the iconic Wat Pho and Grand Palace. Spend the remaining morning exploring these two remarkable sites, learning about the country’s regal history and the deep-rooted spiritual traditions of its people.

Then hop aboard a tuk tuk, Thailand’s famous three-wheeled vehicles taken throughout the country. Zip through the quieter city streets of Soi Ban Batra. Visit a family-run workshop that produces bowls used by monks for receiving alms. Witness the artisans at work and learn about the daily lives of the Buddhist monks, who wake early to collect alms offerings from the city’s residents.

The last leg of today’s Bangkok full-day tour is on a ‘bus boat’ through the city’s canals. Rarely used by tourists, this ride provides an up-close look at the ways of life of the local people who live alongside the canals. Then it’s a short walk to the Jim Thompson House. Take an insightful tour of the compound’s tranquil gardens and traditional buildings, which showcases the history of the famous and mysterious American silk merchant. Afterwards stroll to the nearby modern shopping malls for some retail therapy before returning to the hotel via Skytrain.

Upon arriving at the halfway mark, stop by a 200-year-old community settlement and visit a Chinese shrine and talk to the local community’s shipwright. Then, hop back onto the kayaks and paddle through some tropical fruit orchards and among Bangkok’s oldest wooden architecture houses where time stands still and the modern materialistic life gives way to a simpler way of life. Immerse in these ancient times and enjoy the the scenic sights of Bangkok’s waterways.

Complete the trip at Bangrak Pier in Taling Chan. Freshen up and get changed before tucking into a mouthwatering lunch at a local restaurant.

Chiang Mai - Sightseeing

Transfers today total around: 1 hours

Good morning Chiang Mai!

After arriving at the train station, take a quick breakfast before heading to the hotel. Depending on the arrival time, check-in to the room, or simply freshen up for a hiking adventure. Trek up the Monks Trail up to Doi Suthep Mountain. This trail was, in the old ages, only used by the monks on their way to Wat Phra That Temple, the end destination for today.

Begin hiking at the foot of the mountain before setting off through nature, with a slight ascend uphill. After a 30 minute walk, arrive at Wat Pha Lat, possibly one of Chiang Mai’s least visited temples. This temple is hidden from usual tourists, only accessible by hiking the Monk’s Trail. Take a break and stroll around this breathtaking and mysterious-looking temple so beautifully hidden in the jungle. Then be transferred up to Wat Phra That Temple and be rewarded with the best views over Chiang Mai city while listening to the guide explain the religion.

After a delicious lunch, take a local songteaw further up the mountains to visit the White Hmong Village, a local hill tribe village which still lives by their ancient ways before going back to the hotel to relax for a few hours.

Overnight in Chiang Mai.

Phong Nha – Anh Xa – Vinh Moc – Phuoc Tich - Hue

Dong Hoi to Hue (185km): 4 hours

Depart early morning, heading south to go to Hue. On the way, the first stop located approximately 1 hour from Dong Hoi is the childhood house of the General Vo Nguyen Giap. He was born in this village in 1911. He started to participate in revolutionary activities from the age of 14 and became one of the most excellent students of Ho Chi Minh, fighting during both French and American wars. He is famous for his leadership which led to the victory of the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1946 against the French army. The house was actually burned by French soldiers but restored in 1977. It is a beautiful traditional wooden house located in a charming garden. Visit the house thanks to Mr. Ham, his grandson who currently lives there and who will show the memorable pictures and books of his grandfather.

Back to the car for a transfer of 1 hour to Vinh Moc Tunnels. The route is scenic after leaving the main highway passing through quaint villages and skirting along Cua Tung Beach. The Vinh Moc village story is a feat of humanity and resistance.  In order to escape heavy bombardment during the war, the villagers constructed approximately 2.8 km of underground tunnels which they used as a refuge to survive the bombings. Three hundred people lived intermittently in the tunnels from 1966 to 1971.  Explore the tunnels and enjoy the beautiful sea view upon exit!

Lunch will be served at a local restaurant in Dong Ha.

In the afternoon, drive around 30 min to the 500-year-old village of Phuoc Tich. Once famous and prosperous because of its pottery, the village has dozens of homes that are from 100 to 200 years old and several old temples, pagodas, worship halls and communal houses still remain. Many imprints of Champa and ancient Viet cultures are still preserved such as lingas (a very complex symbol of Hinduism). The religious culture of the village is seen via families, which have their own ancestor worship halls, each worshiping five direct generations.

Following the visit, take a one-hour drive to Hue and arrive in the late afternoon.

Hue Royal tomb cycling

Transfer: 30 mins Cycling distance up to: 30 km Difficulty: Easy

Today the cycling begins from the hotel exploring some of Hue’s most important cultural sites. The first stop is at the Imperial Citadel, which is modelled after the Forbidden City in China. After exploring the ruins, cruise along the Perfume River to Thien Mu pagoda, continuing the cycling to Minh Mang mausoleum. Follow up with a loop across the perfume river to Hue via the mausoleum, with another stop at Khai Dinh.

Hue – Hoi An

Transfer: 1 hour Cycling distance up to: 100km (60km if not cycle over Hai Van pass) Difficulty: Hard

Take a bus beyond the city limits of Hue to avoid the busy traffic. Begin riding off the beaten track for 40 km along a picturesque, narrow peninsular road from Thuan An beach to Vinh Loc. From here, transfer to a vehicle or cycle to the start point of today’s three hill climbs!

After the first two moderate climbs of 2-3 km a piece, cruise down to stunning Lang Co Beach for a rest/swim before tackling the final hill of the day – the Hai Van or Pass of Ocean Clouds. With a new tunnel now cutting through the mountain, the 11 km of uphill cycling will be on a quiet section of road. The gradient is manageable and the views are breathtaking! Upon descent, a transfer will be provided all the way to Hoi An, a delightful old trading town and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Transfer: 1 hours Kayaking: 2-2.5 hours Difficulty: easy

Enjoy amazing landscapes while paddling along before arriving at the ancient town (approx. 5 hrs).

Stop at a local shop for a coffee break before continuing the journey. Experience the sights of Hoi An’s Lantern Town from the unique perspective of the water. The former port city’s melting-pot history is reflected in its architecture, a mix of eras and styles.
