Tokyo

Start (guided tour): 09:00 Duration: 8 h *including pick-up/drop-off and transit times

Our guide will be waiting at the hotel in the morning to set out on a full day of sightseeing in Tokyo, utilising the city’s efficient train system.

The tour starts with a stroll in the gardens of Hamarikyu, a perfect example of a Japanese-style garden that has its origins back in the Edo period. While its wide collection of seasonal flowers make it one of the most visited gardens in Tokyo, what makes it even more attractive is its teahouse called Nakajima-no-Ochaya. The teahouse serves freshly made green tea and offers lovely views of the surrounding pond and greenery.

Next embark on a scenic cruise along Sumida River, showing the more modern face of the city. The journey becomes more popular in spring, when the riverbanks are lined with cherry trees abloom.

The boat disembarks in Asakusa, one of the few remaining old towns in Tokyo that still has the atmosphere of Edo. Tourists flock the area to explore the grounds that surround the temple complex either by checking the local shops along Nakamise-dori or by visiting the humble Senso-ji Temple. Asakusa is also known for its numerous restaurants specializing in traditional Japanese cuisine, with tempura being one of the most sought-after dishes.

The tour ends with a visit to Meiji Shrine, a sanctuary for Shinto followers and thousands of tall cedar trees. The shrine is a popular venue for traditional Japanese weddings, offering a very rare opportunity of witnessing a procession wherein the Buddhist monks lead the couple to the prayer hall while chanting prayers.

Just outside the shrine grounds are the shopping districts of Omotesando and Harajuku. Here it is possible to part ways with the guide to make the way back to the hotel.

Note: The order of this itinerary may change depending on the location of your hotel.

Tokyo, Optional Day Tours

Time: Start: 13:45 (may vary depending the season) Duration: 3h Journey: 10 km (mostly cycling, a bit of walking and light sightseeing also involved).

Today is a self-guided day.

Suggested Self-Guided Itinerary:

Enjoy the rest of the day exploring this amazing city. Make an early start to visit the electronics district of Akihabara or discover Tokyo’s world-class museums and art galleries.

Alternatively, take an excursion in Kamakura. One of Japan’s former capitals, Kamakura is a delightful seaside town home to many ancient shrines, temples, and other structures like the Daibutsu, a giant bronze Buddha that stands at 13-meter tall.

Distance and journey time (approximation):

JR Tokyo Station to JR Kamakura Station: 50 min

Optional Activity: Cool Tokyo Cycling Tour

Today’s tour starts at 13:45. Meet the guide, who is sometimes accompanied by his adorable dog “Jack-san,” at Sasazuka Station, and head together to the cycling studio for a bicycle and helmet fitting. On the way, listen to some fascinating insights and entertaining anecdotes about the local neighbourhood, and get some useful explanations from the guide about Tokyo’s cycling etiquette and today’s itinerary.

When everything is ready, depart for today’s cycling tour. Leave Sasazuka with the guide, and cycle to the first location, enjoying the best of Tokyo’s urban design and natural environment on the way. Depending on the season, enjoy the surrounding foliage, which is especially beautiful in the spring when the plum and cherry blossoms bloom, and in the autumn, when the trees are a blaze of colour. There will be several cultural and architectural design stops along the way, where the guide will share interesting information and allow some time for photos.

Bike through Tokyo’s backstreets, local shotengai (small commercial streets) in hip neighbourhoods such as Shimo-Kitazawa, and some little-known parks, seeing the guide’s favourite areas and shops, and stopping for a break at a charming café.

Next, head back to Sasazuka where bicycles will be returned to the guide, and either freely keep exploring Tokyo independently, head back to the accommodation to freshen up, or join the guide and the rest of the group for a local meal such as gyoza (pan-fried dumplings).

Time:

Start: 13:45 (may vary depending the season)

Duration: 3h

Journey: 10 km (mostly cycling, a bit of walking and light sightseeing also involved).
