Chengdu

Estimate distance and journey time: Chengdu Airport – Chengdu city (approx. 20 km): 30 min *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take

Begin the first full day of this Sichuan tour with a leisurely walk through People’s Park; a perfect example of a Chinese park with locals practicing everything from Tai-Chi, Kung-fu and sword dance to meditation, dance and gymnastics… all activities considered essential to one’s well being.

Continue onwards to the archaeological site of Sanxingdui, located close to the town of Guanhan. It was here that hundreds of objects were found dating from as early as 2000 BC. While items of jade and ceramics were discovered in the 1930s, it was the discoveries of 1986 that were perhaps the most spectacular. A fabulous collection of masks and a bronze “divine tree” were unearthed, dating back to the Shang dynasty, attesting to the existence of a mysterious parallel culture in Sichuan province- a discovery that fascinates scientists to this day.

Head back towards Chengdu and visit the Wenshu Temple, the best preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu. Enjoy a relaxing cup of tea in the adjacent House of Tea before dining in the garden of the vegetarian restaurant in the temple.

Dujiangyan / Chengdu

Estimate distance and journey time: Chengdu city – Dujiangyan (approx. 65km): 1h40 *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take longer

In the morning visit the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant panda Dujiangyan Base.

The panda (“xiongmao” in Chinese, literally meaning “bear-cat”) is an endangered species that the Chinese Government and specialist NGOs have been consciously protecting since the 1980s. Their efforts have been rewarded and the latest population counts have shown an increase of nearly 50% in the number of pandas in the world (it is reckoned that there are more than 2000 living in the wild, although it is hard to give an exact figure).

The volunteer programmer include cleaning panda enclosures, preparing panda food, watching films about pandas, visiting the Panda Center of Science and Education, attending panda classes, and planting bamboo and trees. Activities are flexible, and the program can be redesigned according to the pandas' needs, participants' requirements and interests, and other factors.

After visiting Panda, head to Qingcheng Mountain, it is a mountain in Dujiangyan. It is amongst the most important centres of Taoism (Daoism) in China. In Taoist mythology, it was the site of the Yellow Emperor's studies with Ning Fengzhi. As a centre of the Daoist religion it became host to many temples.

Later on, visiting the Dujiangyan irrigation system, which was originally constructed around 256 BC by the State of Qin as a water conservation and flood control project. The system's infrastructure is located on the Min River (Sichuan), which is the longest tributary of the Yangtze, in Sichuan, China. The area is situated in the western portion of the Chengdu flat lands at the confluence between the Sichuan basin and the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. Originally the Min River rushed down from the Min Mountains, but slowed abruptly after reaching the Chengdu Plains, causing the watercourse to fill up with silt, making the surrounding area extremely prone to flooding. Li Bing, then governor of Shu for the state of Qin, and his son headed the construction of the Dujiangyan, which harnessed the river using a new method of channeling and dividing the water rather than simply following the old way of dam building. It is still in use today to irrigate over 5,300 square kilometers of land in the region. The Dujiangyan along with the Zhengguo Canal in Shaanxi and the Lingqu Canal in Guangxi are collectively known as the “three great hydraulic engineering projects of the Qin dynasty.”

Emeishan

Emei Mountain is one of four Sacred Buddhist Mountains in China, and is still considered a major place of pilgrimage. Most its temples and monasteries date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and are linked by more than 50km (31 miles) of stairs and mountain pathways.

The day will consist of different explorations around the region, alternating between walking, taking the bus and riding a cable-car (bus and cable-car are public transfer in Emeishan). Take in the temples and surrounding pine forest, and watch out for Tibetan macaques along the way. Please do not feed the macaques or carry anything that resembles food- they are known to be quite fearless with humans!

Note: Due to Chinese regulations private cars and drivers are not allowed in (most of the) Chinese scenic sites, upon arrival at the sites with the private vehicle, it will be changed to join a scenic site shuttle bus for further transportation inside the site. Please kindly note that the shuttle bus is not private and it will possibly to travel with other visitors. Please consult us if there is any questions.

Head with the guide (by bus) to the Baoguo Temple. Located outside the heart of a beautiful garden, the temple is known for its porcelain Buddha, made in the famous imperial furnaces of Jingdezhen.

Transfer by bus then cable-car to the Wannian Temple, which is the oldest temple on Emei Mountain. Soak in the bronze statue of Puxian on a white elephant, weighing in at more than 62 tonnes!

Optionally: depending on the climate, it’s recommend to take a walk back from Wannian Temple (4km/2.5 miles) arriving at the Pavilion of Pure Sound. This stunning pavilion is suspended on a promontory encircled by a waterfall fed by the Black Dragon and White Dragon River.

Continue again by bus and cable-car to the Jinding Temple. Admire not only the majestic golden palace, but also the stunning views of Wanfo peak. At 3099 meters (10,167ft), the mountain towers over the entire site.

Optionally: For those interested, it’s possible to spend the night in one of the various monasteries on the mountain. Though the conditions are quite basic, the experience is truly unforgettable. Please consult us if interested.

Note: it is recommended to wear good shoes, particularly if undertaking the Pavilion of Pure Sound.

Top off the evening enjoying a famous Sichuan Hotpot, a much spicier version of hotpot than found in other parts of China!
