Itinerary

1

Chengdu / Leshan / Emeishan (altitude of 3099m)

Estimate distance and journey time: Chengdu – Leshan (approx. 160 km): 2h40 Leshan–Emeishan(approx. 45 km): 1h *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take longer

Begin this Mount Emeishan hiking trip with a departure from Chengdu for Leshan, where China’s largest Buddha statue was carved into the side of a cliff more than 1,200 years ago. The Giant Buddha measures in at 71m (231ft) high and 28m (92ft) wide – truly a stone giant! Stairs along the length of the Buddha allow close up views of the statue’s detail: from its 7m (23ft) long ears to the  8.5m (28ft) long toes!

Optional: is possible admire the Giant Buddha from the Min River boarding a sightseeing boat. Consult us if interested.

Journey on to Emeishan (UNESCO Heritage), and spend the night at the bottom of the mountain to prepare for the next day’s hike. If time allows, there will be an optional visit to the Baoguo Temple, known for its porcelain Buddha and beautiful gardens.

In the evening, enjoy a famous Sichuan Hotpot, a much spicier version of this traditional dish!

Overnight in Mt Emeishan

Note: All accommodation on the mountain is located inside monasteries or similar. While the setting is evocative and inspiring (stunning views and charming, almost eerie locations), comfort may sometime be limited. We select what we believe to be the most comfortable accommodation. Shorter itineraries are available upon request.

Emeishan - UNESCO Heritage

Wake today at the foot of Mt Emeishan.

Mount Emeishan is one of the four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China; it is still a major place of pilgrimage. Most of its temples and monasteries date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties and are linked by more than 50km (31 miles) of stairs and mountain pathways.

The hike will take about 6-7 hours. The circuit will cover Fuhu Temple, Leiyin Temple, Shengshui Temple and Qingyin Pavillion all the way to Hongcun Ping and the Xianfeng Temple (also the accommodation point for the first day- 1,710 meters). The beauty of this mountain is the change in climates and landscapes over two days’ hike: from bamboo woods to northern forests and snow-covered landscapes.

Alert: On the first day, it is very likely to encounter monkeys (Macaques). While their dimensions are small, they have no fear of humans and may behave aggressively. Avoid carrying food or carrying in-hand objects that can be misjudged as edible. An umbrella or walking stick may disincentive their appetite…

Overnight in Emeishan

Overnight at the Golden Summit (Jinding).

Emeishan UNESCO Heritage

Estimate distance and journey time: Emeishan –Chengdu (approx. 165 km): 2h40 *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take longer

Wake up to appreciate a spectacular sunrise and the Gongga Mountain, the highest Sichuan peak. Impossible to miss will be the stunning views of the Wanfo peak (lit: ten thousand Buddhas), which at 3,099 meters (10,167ft) towers over the whole site.

A sightseeing bus will grant passage down to the entrance, where the driver is awaiting to take the route back to Chengdu. Lunch is scheduled on the mountain.

Note: The best time to visit is from May to October, outside national holidays in order to avoid local groups that flocks here in big numbers.

Snowfall generally starts in November. As such, the temperature changes drastically along the route; clothes suited for rain and cold are a necessity, as are hiking shoes.

If covered in snow, the last part of the hike can be frozen in different stages. While the sights are beautiful, it is imperative to pay attention.

We advise that do not talk sensitive politics topic with guide and locals to avoid any unpleasant experience.
