Itinerary

1

Xi'an arrival

Estimate distance and journey time: Xi’an airport – Xi’an city (approx. 35km): 50 min *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take longer

Launch this unique Xi’an tour experience with a local guide welcoming and

Begin the jourtransportation to the hotel.ney with a visit to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, an icon of Xi’an and one of the most beautiful pagodas in the country. In front of the temple area there is a statue dedicated to one of the main sources of the diffusion in Buddhism in China - Xuan Zang, a monk famous for bringing the sutras from India to China.

From the Pagoda, continue onwards to the Stele Forest, located inside a Confucius Temple and comprising over a thousand steles, the oldest dating as far back as 2000 years ago! It is the largest collection of steles in the entire country and boasts portraits, cards, and sculptures.

Conclude the day with a visit to the magnificent Shaanxi History Museum, a leading light on the ever-growing list of high quality museums in China. The museum offers excellent collections from the period of the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC) through to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), but it is certainly the pieces from the Han and Tang dynasty, Xi’an’s imperial period, that are the most impressive. Take part in a Calligraphy Course, one of the bedrocks of Chinese culture and a truly artistic pursuit, in the adjacent Small Wild Goose Pagoda.

Note: The running order of the day is contingent on arrival time into Xi’an.

Xi'an

Estimate distance and journey time: Xi’an city – Terracotta army (approx. 45km): 50 min *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take longer

Undoubtedly the highlight of any Xi’an tour, this day is dedicated to the Terra Cotta Warriors!

In 1974, a few farmers stumbled upon the Warriors by accident… a mistaken discovery that ended up being one of the greatest archeological finds in history!

Inspired into creation thanks to Qin Shi Huangdi’s fear of malevolent spirits, this grand mausoleum houses the emperor’s immense army of infantrymen, archers, and cavalry riders to protect him in the Afterlife. Each of the Terra Cotta Warriors has a different face from a soldier during the Emperor’s life.

The statues are viewable in three separate pits. Begin with pits number 2 (that is still being excavated) and 3 (that shelters the majority of items). ending with pit number 1, the most impressive, with about 2,000 warriors.

Otherwise there is a small museum on site that houses two splendid bronze chariots found in 1980 west of the mausoleum. You can now see them on display along with other artifacts.

After visiting the warrios, embark on a bike tour (or for an additional charge a cart tour) for about one hour to discover Xi’an… without the traffic jams and crowds! For a bike with a bit more jazz, try out a ride on a tandem bike. During the cycling Xi’an tour, experience the impressive Xi’an ramparts built during the Ming Dynasty.

In addition to the extraordinary Terra Cotta Warriors, Xi’an is also a city of many cultures. During the day of the Silk Road, Muslim merchants from Central Asia came to China to do business and left their influence in Xi’an. Several Muslim minorities (totaling 15 million inhabitants) now live in China. A fantastic visit reflecting this aspect of Xi’an’s history is the Chinese-style Mosque and its vibrant surrounding neighborhood. At dinner, appreciate the unique ambiance of Xi’an’s night while dining on the neighborhood’s specialties of spiced lamb kebabs, flat bread, and mutton soup with noodles.

Xi'an / Huashan / Xi'an

Estimate distance and journey time: Xi’an city – Huashan Mountain (approx. 120km): less than 2 hours *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take longer

Continue the Xi’an tour by heading out to Huashan (Flower Mountain) in the early morning. Though often forgotten, Mount Huashan is one of the 5 sacred Taoist mountains and offers superb views of the sharp peaks. Couples can come and seal their relationships by attaching locks to the rocks at the summit, whilst devout believers perform their pilgrimage.

Begin the ascent by heading to the Northern Peak (altitude 1615m) via cable and then by foot the Eastern Peak, admiring the breathtaking views along Blue Dragon Ridge. Once at the East peak, either choose to turn back or complete the full loop that passes through the South Peak and West Peak to Peak North, where you will take the cable car back down. As trails are narrow, caution must be exercised on the steep stairs and sandy pathways. (Loop takes between 3 and 5 hours, depending on personal pace). We recommend bringing plenty of drinks, snacks, and a good pair of walking boots

Picnic lunch (depending on weather)

Upon arrival at the foot of the mountain, a car will be waiting for transport back to Xi’an.

Optional: This walk can be done by night along with other pilgrims who come to climb Mount Huashan. Every person in the group will carry a lantern or a torch and from a distance the group will quickly begin to resemble a caterpillar slowly climbing the mountain face, ascending the thousands of steps leading to the summit. Xi'an departure

Estimate distance and journey time: Xi’an city – Han Yangling tomb (approx. 27km): 40 min Han Yangling tomb – Xi’an airport (approx. 30km): 25 min *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take longer

Before heading back with the airport transfer, take the opportunity to visit the essential Jingdi tomb, better known as “Han Yangling”; though little visited compared to Terra cotta army, it’s well worth the detour!

The tomb, opened to the public in 2006, houses a multitude of figurines representing eunuchs, servers and domestic animals, and brings more to mind the normal day life under the Han Dynasty than the Qin Shi Huangdi tomb with its warlike appearance.

Walk along on a glass panel over the different pits and observe closely the most recently uncovered statuettes. The site also contains a small museum showing the items in the best condition. The importance of the contrast between the two excavation sites near Xi’an makes this visit essential.

Finally, wrap up the Xi’an tour with a transfer back to the airport.
