Banteay Srei Homestay Experience

Itinerary

1

Siem Reap – Banteay Srei

Siem Reap – Banteay Srei Temple (37km)

This morning set out to experience an incredible tour to learn about life in a typical Cambodian village, meet friendly locals and discover traditional village customs and cultures of Banteay Srei.

Continue along routes with rice paddies and beautiful Cambodian countryside all around. Pass through Pradak village which is renowned for all types of traditional Khmer Noodles or Ka Tien. Stop off at one of several restaurants at Preah Dak to sample a traditional nam ben chok noodles – the village’s signature dish – that were freshly cooked before us, made of rice paddy flour and server with a yellow curry soup or Praher Khmer. A short stroll down the street will take you to a local market.

On the way, stop at the Landmine Museum which promotes mine awareness. Mr. Aki Ra, the museum founder, has been working as a de-miner since the end of the war, when he taught himself how to deactivate them! The museum also serves as a rescue center for a number of landmine amputee children that Aki Ra has brought off Phnom Penh’s streets or from impoverished rural communities.

Take a short break for lunch in a local restaurant before a short transfer to Banteay Srey Village.

Arrival in the village and check in at Bayon Smile Homestay.

After a short relaxing break, a 30 minute ox cart ride will take you to through the picturesque countryside village, stopping off to meet the local community along the way to observe whatever seasonal activity is happening at that time, such as rice planting, weaving thatch roofs, planting or harvesting vegetable crops, making fish traps etc. Each tour will be different and the activities will depend on the time of the year, the family, and the needs of the local village. The surrounding countryside with its paddy fields and sugar palm trees is very typical for Cambodia.

This evening, a delicious dinner will be prepared by the host for you.

On the second day, start with an early morning visit to Banteay Srei to beat the crowds but before that you have a possibility to enjoy a short boat trip on the ancient baray of the temple.

Visit the “gem” of the Angkor area, the pretty temple of Banteay Srei. The so-called “Citadel of the Women” remains the best preserved temple in Cambodia. It displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art as this small temple is noted for its truly remarkable fine bas-reliefs. Banteay Srei is unique in that it is constructed of pink sandstone, which is seen nowhere else in Angkor.
