Itinerary

1

Nagoya – Amanemu

Nagoya to Ise Shrine (135 km): 1 h 45 min Ise Shrine to Amanemu (30 km): 1 h

Begin the experience by meeting with the knowledgeable, English-speaking guide at JR Nagoya Station.

Travel by private car towards the rural Mie Prefecture, famous for its forested landscapes and Mediterranean looking coastlines. The area is famous for producing some of the freshest seafood in Japan and in its waters pearl cultivation has become an important activity.

After around two hours by car, make a stop at the famous Ise Shrine. This shrine is considered one of the most sacred areas for the Shinto religion and is one of the favorite pilgrimage destinations for Japanese people.

Just a short walk away, the picturesque district of Okage-Yokocho offers a great outlook on the traditional side of the area with its quaint shops selling local arts and crafts as well as food.

Stop for lunch at one of the elegant Japanese-style restaurants offering refined specialties, such as freshly prepared tofu or grilled eel, and a variety of other local products.

After lunch, have tea or a dessert at one of the local food stalls or Japanese-style cafés in Okage-Yokocho before continuing to the nearby Meoto-Iwa, which literally means “the married couple rocks.” These two stones are joined by an impressive Shinto shimenawa, a rope made of rice straw, and represent the union in marriage of man and woman.

After this visit, continue by private car to Amanemu (approx. 1 hour).

Feel free to spend the rest of the day indulging in the many relaxation and hot spring facilities, or trying the properties’ dining experiences.

Amanemu

Refresh the body and soul today enjoying all the comforts the accommodation offers, including its stunning natural surroundings.

For those who rather want to explore Ise Peninsula a bit further, we suggest the following guided tour:

Optional Tour:

Today, leave Amanemu after lunch by private car together with the guide for an afternoon of discovery of the Ise-Shima Peninsula.

First, move to a fishermen village to explore the hut of the local Ama divers – the women who made Mie Prefecture famous by diving for centuries in the local waters to catch the best marine products.

Visit an Ama diver hut, where one of the divers will be cooking fresh seafood and will serve tea for a very unique tea time.

Thanks to the guide, there will be plenty of chances to communicate with the Ama diver – quite an exclusive occasion to privately learn about Ama’s history and art.

Later in the afternoon move to the Yokoyama Viewpoint for a striking view of Mie’s unique landscapes and its coastlines filled with pearl cultivations.

Finally, pay a visit to Tenpaku, a picturesque artisan laboratory where katsuobushi is produced. Katsuobushi is a typical smoked tuna offered each day to the gods of Ise Shrine as a refined food but also very much loved by the Japanese as a refined seasoning and sold at some of the high-end shops in Tokyo.

Witness the production of this unusual ingredient in this quaint laboratory and have a taste of exclusively prepared katsuobushi rice.

Return to Amanemu in the late afternoon.

Optional extension: Visit the Mikimoto Pearl Museum

Start earlier to include a visit to the Mikimoto Pearl Museum, showcasing the area’s rich history of pearl cultivation. There will also be a chance to buy refined pearl products and to see an Ama divers’ demonstration.
