Kota Kinabalu – Maliau Basin Studies Centre (MBSC)
Transfer from Kota Kinabalu City to Maliau Basin Studies Centre: (330KM) 6 hours
Depart Kota Kinabalu at 08:00 for a 6-hour drive to the Maliau Basin Conservation Centre for the start of a four days untamed jungle trek. Leave the city of Kota Kinabalu behind and head to the hills of the Crocker Range and into Borneo’s rugged island interior.
Maliau Basin, also known as Sabah’s Lost World, surrounded by cliffs and steep slopes, is a hidden paradise of flora, fauna and geology located in South-Central Sabah. Sabah’s last true wilderness, and one of the world’s oldest rainforests, the Maliau Basin Conservation Area remain barely explored. Featuring various types of forest including lower montane, heath and dipterocarp, Maliau Basin is home to an impressive range of large mammals such as the Borneo pygmy elephant, clouded leopard, Malayan sun bear and banteng (wild cattle) and rare species of birds.
Stop for a local lunch enroute. On arrival at mid afternoon, check-in to the Maliau Basin Studies Centre before a chance to stretch legs on the jungle canopy walk that stretches over 400 metres. The walk features river crossings 20 metres above the ground.
Return to the Studies Centre for dinner.
Overnight at Maliau Basin Studies Centre.
Optional activities: Take a night drive by four-wheel drive to spot nocturnal wildlife. Return to the Studies Centre and take a good night rest.
Please note: Sleeping arrangements will be on dormitory beds with shared bathroom and shower. No sleeping bags and mosquito net are provided.
Porters: It is encouraged to carry personal backpacks but if porters are needed, they are available from Agathis Camp and can be arranged directly via cash payment MYR120 per day/MYR480 for the duration. The maximum weight is 12kg and it is subject to availability.
Maliau Basin Studies Centre – Agathis Camp - Nepenthes Camp
Transfer from MBSC to Agathis Camp: (8.8km) 30 minutesTrekking time to Nepenthes Camp: (7.5KM) 5-6 hoursActivity Level: Hard
Take breakfast at 07:00 before starting today’s 7.5km trek through rainforest to Nepenthes Camp. From the Studies Centre take a short transfer to Agathis Camp where today’s 6-hour trek begins.
Begin with a challenging 3km ascend through rugged terrain. Climb with a slow and steady pace and plenty of rest stops to acclimatise to the hot humid environment.
Take a packed lunch enroute. Learn about the Agathis Tree commonly found in the Maliau Basin Conservation Area, listen to the sound of Gibbons from afar and if lucky spot a helmeted hornbill.
Upon arrival at Nepenthes Camp check into a two-story building with basic accommodation, bunk beds and limited electricity for two nights stay. Explore the area, climb the 33m high observation platform next to the camp for a breathtaking view looking over the tree canopy.
Spend some time at leisure before dinner is served.

Nepenthes Camp – Takob Akob Fall - Fowzi Fall – Giluk Fall

Following breakfast, prepare for today’s 6-hour trek ahead returning back to stay a second night at the Nepenthes Camp. Start the day with a 2-hour trek to the highest waterfall in Maliau Basin, Takob Akob Fall. The drop of Takob Akob Fall is 38 metres.
Proceed for a further 1-2 hours trek to Fowzi fall. Enjoy some time to relax and take in the surrounding rich vegetation before proceeding to Giluk Fall for a refreshing dip.
Return to Nepenthes Camp for dinner.

Nepenthes Camp – Maliau Falls - Ginseng Camp (Ginseng Fall)
Trekking time from Nepenthes Camp to Maliau Fall: (12KM) 4 - 5 hoursTrekking time from Maliau Fall to Ginseng Camp: (5.5KM) 2 – 3 hoursTrekking time from Ginseng Camp to Ginseng Fall (500M) 15 minutesActivity Level: Hard
Today wake up early for breakfast at 06:00. The trek will start at 07:00 for a 9-hour trek through undulating lowland Dipterocarp Forest to the seven-tiered Maliau Falls. The largest and most famous of the waterfalls, an undisputed jewel in the crown in the Maliau Basin. It’s a spectacular seven-tiered waterfall cascading down over and over into Maliau River. The highest fall is 28 metres.
Arrive at Maliau Falls at around midday to stop for lunch and to spend some time to enjoy the area of the falls before continuing the trek to Ginseng Camp. Arrive at Ginseng Camp in the midafternoon, drop the bags and continue for a 15-minute short trek to Ginseng Fall. Time to explore the falls before returning to Ginseng Camp for dinner.

Ginseng Camp – Agathis Camp - Kota Kinabalu City
Trekking time from Ginseng Camp to Agathis Camp: (9KM) 4 - 5 hoursTransfer from Agathis Camp to Kota Kinabalu City: (330KM) 6 hoursActivity Level: Medium
After breakfast at 07:30, start the 4-5-hour trek down to Agathis Camp. Enjoy a packed lunch enroute in the rainforest.
At 13:00 depart for the 6-hour transfer back to the city of Kota Kinabalu or continue onto the next destination.
Please Note: Some places are steep and slippery in sections with some ropes and aluminum or wooden ladder. Electricity via generator available on every camp from 18.00 to 22.00.
