Up close and personal with wildlife

Visit the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in time for the morning feeding session and then head to the Sun Bear Conservation Centre after. 

Cruise the Kinabatangan River

Take a riverboat up the Kinabatangan River in search for wildlife such as the native proboscis monkeys, elephants, hornbills, gibbons, and many others. 

Stunning aquamarine of Kota Kinabalu

Head over to the nearby Gaya Island to experience an interisland zipline from Gaya Island back to Sapi. Get a seven seconds adrenaline rush ziplining over the stunning aquamarine water. 



Arrival, Sandakan transfer to Hotel

Sandakan Airport to Sepilok (17km) 20 min

After meeting with the guide at Sandakan Airport, head by private minivan to Sandakan Memorial Park for a quick stopover to learn about Sabah’s fascinating role in WWII.  Hop back in the vehicle and transfer to Sepilok.

After late afternoon, check in and spend the evening at leisure.

Sepilok Hotel to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre: 5-minute walk

After breakfast in the morning, depart for the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in time for the morning feeding session at 10:00 then head to the Sun Bear Conservation Centre nearby. This centre aims to increase awareness of this endearing, but little-known bear species.

Walk back to the hotel for lunch. This afternoon, walk the jungle canopy walk of the Rainforest Discovery Centre. The Canopy Walkway is about 347 metres long providing great opportunities for nature watching and fantastic views over the rainforest. Spend time walking along some of the many nature trails before returning to the lodge to spend the rest of the day at leisure

Sepilok to Kinabatangan River

Sepilok to Sandakan Jetty (26km): 30mins Sandakan Jetty to Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort by boat: 1.5hrs Cruise times: PM – 16:00 Cruise duration will depend on wildlife spotting: approx. 2 hours

Transfer by private air-conditioned minivan with the guide to Sandakan Jetty. Take a two-hour boat journey across the Kinabatangan River and enjoy the scenes of local villages and lush rainforest.

Arrive at the lodge at 13:00, check in and enjoy lunch. The local guide will conduct a briefing on the upcoming activities and advice on recommended gear. Time in the afternoon to relax.

Late in the afternoon, hop on a riverboat for a cruise up the Kinabatangan River to search for wildlife -most notably, the proboscis monkeys which are native to Borneo. Other fauna likely to be spotted in the Lower Kinabatangan Reserve includes elephants, hornbills, gibbons, and many birds.

Return to the lodge for dinner before mid-evening then take a stroll along the boardwalk and lookout for nocturnal animals and interesting insects.

Cruise times: AM – 06:30, PM – 16:00. EVE – 20:00 Cruise duration will depend on wildlife spotting: approx. 2 hours

Rise at 06:00 in the morning for a cruise to crescent-shaped Kelenanap Oxbow Lake and learn about how its unique shape was formed. The stillness and secluded location of the lake provides a haven for animals and plants creating a different ecosystem distinct from that of the river.

Visit the local fishing village, Kampung Abai and interact with local orang sungai (river people) and observe daily activities in the fishing village.

Return to the resort for breakfast and the rest of the day is spent at leisure before heading out in the late afternoon to watch the river activities of many primate species that become active during this time. The afternoon is a particularly advantageous time to spot wildlife and the light is perfect for photography.

After dinner, take a night river safari and go on a lookout for wildlife species.

Kinabatangan – Tabin Wildlife Reserve

Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort to Sukau Jetty by boat: 1hrs Sukau Jetty to Lahad Datu (Tabin Wildlife Reserve Office): up to 3hrs Lahad Datu to Tabin Wildlife Reserve: 1.5hrs

Rise and shine at 07:00 for departure to Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Take a one-hour transfer by boat to Sukau Jetty to pick up overland transportation to Lahad Datu. From Lahad Datu depart at 13:30 for an overland transfer by 4WD. (Private transfers can be scheduled earlier to arrive in Tabin for lunch)

Upon arrival, check into a charming wooden cottage within the reserve and take some time to freshen up or relax before heading out for a bit of exploration. In the afternoon enjoy a short trek through the jungle to Tabin’s rich mineral mud volcano. 

After dinner, head out for a night nature walk under the star-studded sky.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve

Join an early morning bird walk in search of some of Tabin’s 220 species of birds. After breakfast, take a drive to a bird watch tower before a short trek through the lush green rainforest, which is known for its rich diversity of plants and animal species. Visit Lipad Waterfall and take a dip in the beautiful naturally occurring pool at its base  or explore the surrounding vegetation.

In the afternoon, relax in the beautiful natural surroundings of the lodge and enjoy the area’s splendid serenity.

After dinner, go for a night walk along the trail near the resort to search for sleeping frogs and nocturnal wildlife.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve to Danum Valley

Tabin Wildlife Reserve to Lahad Datu(Borneo Rainforest Lodge Office to pick up 4WD): 1.5hrs Lahad Datu to Borneo Rainforest Lodge by 4WD(100km): 2.5hrs (bumpy unsealed road)

After breakfast in the morning, hop back in the private transport and transfer 1.5 hours to Lahad Datu for a pick up by 4WD. Then head on another 2.5 hour transfer journey through thick rainforests of Danum Valley – one of the world’s most complex ecosystems. Around 30km of this 85km journey is on sealed roads, and the last two hours are along a gravel road – expect a bumpy but interesting ride!

Upon arrival at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, check in and enjoy lunch before a late afternoon walk along the trails and the 130-metre-tall, 300-metre-long canopy walk. From this vantage point, experience the cacophony of sounds in the jungle.

After dinner, board one of the open-top 4WD vehicles for an exhilarating night tour. Accompanied by a local guide who uses a spotlight to look for nocturnal animals, spot a range of animals that inhabit the reserve, from the samba deer to civet cats, leopards, and an array of exotic insects and frogs.

Afterwards, return to the lodge. .

Danum Valley

Awake to the songs of the jungle’s choir featuring birds,  to primates and other jungle inhabitants who sing to begin the day..

Breakfast is on-the-go while travelling to a 200-year-old Kadazandusun Burial Site, known as ‘Coffin Cliff,’ along the 2.6km Viewpoint Trail. The end of this trail results in spectacular views of a million-year-old jungle – a truly spectacular sight. The return journey includes a trip to the waterfalls!

Return to the resort for lunch.

The rest of the afternoon is spent at leisure; however, there is a range of optional activities available, such as private trekking, tubing on the Danum River and specialised guided tours. There are also a series of tracks around the Canopy Walk to be discovered.

Enjoy an early dinner at the lodge at 19:00.

At 08:30 this evening, venture into the jungle on foot with a local guide. Quietly entering the jungle reveals a stunning array of wildlife, not to mention the variety and size of the many insects that flourish in the evening hours.

Danum Valley - Kota Kinabalu

Danum Valley to Lahad Datu Airport (96km) 2.5 hours Kota Kinabalu Airport to Kota Kinabalu Hotel (12km): 30 mins

Breakfast and morning is spent at leisure.

At noon, enjoy a scrumptious lunch before checking out and then transfer to Lahad Datu Airport to catch the flight to Kota Kinabalu.

Arrival in Kota Kinabalu airport and make an onwards transfer to the hotel and check-in. Spend the evening at leisure.

Kota Kinabalu Kayak and Zipline

Sea Kayaking activity: 4 hours Activity difficulty: Medium Kota Kinabalu Night city Walk:1-2 hours

At 08:00 this morning take a short transfer from the hotel to Jesselton point. Meet the kayaking guide for the day and together take a 20-minute boat ride to Manukan Island in Tunku Abdul Marine Park. Pull up to the white sand beaches where the kayaks await. After a short safety briefing, put on a life jacket.  Have a short practice and head approx. 3.4km to Sapi island. The paddle is normally smooth but expect some swell especially if there has been some wind the day before.

Head over to the nearby Gaya island to experience an interisland zipline from Gaya Island back to Sapi Island. Feel the adrenaline rush while flying over the stunning aquamarine water.

After lunch, paddle around Sapi Island and along the coast of Gaya Island and stop at some deserted beaches for a short snorkel. Later in the afternoon, paddle for around 4km back to Manukan Island. Leave the kayak here and take a boat back to Jesselton Point and an onward transfer to the hotel. There will be time to shower and freshen up before the final night in Kota Kinabalu.

In the early evening, meet the guide in the hotel lobby to take a walk along Kota Kinabalu’s waterfront. Visit the Filipino Market before sitting down for a sunset drink along the waterfront.

After sunset, walk back to the fish market where dinner will be the catch of the day. Try a local sweet treat before heading back to the hotel.

Say goodbye and transfer to the airport for an onward flight or extend the experience in Sabah by climbing Malaysia’s tallest mountain, Mount Kinabalu.
