Sapporo, Guided Tour

Start (guided tour): 09:00 Duration: 8 h *including pick-up/drop-off and transfer times

Depart with the guide this morning from the hotel for a tour around the highlights of Sapporo.

Stop first at Odori Park, a 105-meter wide and 1.5-kilometer long boulevard located at the heart of the city. The park becomes more popular in February, for it serves as the main site for the annual Snow Festival.

A short walk towards the eastern side of the park is the Sapporo Clock Tower, the historical and cultural symbol of the city. Originally built in 1878, the clock tower now serves as a museum that displays not only the history of the tower itself but also of Sapporo. On the second floor is a ceremony hall that depicts the iconic interior designs of the colonial American Midwest.

Before noon, head to Nijo Market, one of the best markets in Hokkaido, selling nothing but the freshest marine products. Enjoy lunch in one of its local restaurants. One of our recommendations is donburi, a bowl of warm rice topped with fresh sea urchin, salmon roe, and sashimi.

After lunch, head to Asahi Breweries for a scheduled beer factory tour. Just like Sapporo, Asahi is also one of the big names known worldwide to produce well-crafted beer. The guided tour lasts for about 90 minutes and includes presentations about the history of the brewery, the production process that starts with the keen selection of fine ingredients, and a free tasting of freshly brewed beer (up to 3 glasses per person).

End the day with a visit to the compound shared by Sapporo Beer Museum and Sapporo Beer Garden. After a short tour of the buildings and the area, part ways with the guide at the beer garden for a more private evening.

Sapporo, Optional Day Trip to Otaru

Sapporo Station to Otaru Station: 45 min

Today is a self-guided day.

Enjoy a pleasant day trip to Otaru, half an hour northwest of Sapporo.

Suggested Self-Guided Itinerary:

Otaru is a historic port city not far from Sapporo. It has developed and prospered as “the sea entrance of Hokkaido” over the last 100 years and it has gained the nickname “Wall Street of the North.”

Many shops and restaurants along the canal have been converted from stone-built or brick-built warehouses, which were used for storage.

From there, head to Sakaimachi Street, a preserved merchant street with many restaurants, boutique shops and museums such as the Music Box Museum, Glass Workshops, and strangely enough, a museum on Venetian Art.

Enjoy walking around this beautiful town. Don’t miss trying some of the best and freshest sushi in Hokkaido, maybe even Japan!

After the explorations, head back to Sapporo.
