Itinerary

1

Arrival in Changbai Mountains

Changbaishan Airport –Wanda Resort (approx. 20km): 40 mins *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take longer

Touching down near the peak’s west face, the Changbai Mountain tour is set to begin. One of the more isolated travel destinations of northeast China, this pristine national park houses the region’s most infamous volcanic formation: Mt. Paektu (Changbai.) After a guided welcome and transfer, get situated at the Wanda Resort and prepare for the breathtaking days to come.

Flights and Programs: Direct flights to the Changbai Mountains are available from Beijing, Dalian, Shanghai and Shenyang. Timetables vary considerably which can alter the layout of the program entirely. This particular package has been based on an arrival flight in the evening and the departure flight in the morning; itinerary can change according to adjusted flight times.

Note: This region of China is rarely frequented by foreign tourists. Guides hold a rudimentary level of English and are accompanied by drivers meticulously following the provided itinerary. In addition to EXO numbers, travelers will be provided with an emergency number in Shenyang (capital of the neighboring province) should any problems or changes occur with the program. Outside guides and translators are also available from Shenyang or Harbin at additional costs (see the supplementary cost in the terms and conditions).

Changbai Mountain West (altitude of 2500m)

Welcome to the West Face!

Crossing through the park’s impressive entrance, take the guided pass leading up to a grand wooden staircase: 1,200 steps ascending to breathtaking views of Celestial Lake, the body of water filling the volcanic crater of Changbai Mountain. Over two million years old and 350 meters in depth, this famed body of water is said to house an aquatic monster among its depths!

Following the Celestial visit, head back down to one of the park’s secondary lakes (King Lake), where a three-hour walk winds through beautiful alpine countryside. Soak in the striking views of the Changbai Mountains and, weather permitting, enjoy a picnic in the great outdoors.

Note: King Lake is inaccessible from the end of November – March.

Transfer onwards through the Changbaishan Pass: an impressive stretch of 70 kilometers sitting 200 meters wide and 100 meters deep, cutting through a series of rock formations. A small, wooden-planked walkway leads through the region, providing an hour’s worth of exploration.

End the day with a transfer back to the entrance of the park, where the driver awaits to return to the hotel.

Dinner & Overnight: Sample a regional specialty of Korean-style fondue or barbecue, and overnight in Changbaishan (west).

3

Changbaishan North (altitude of 2190m)

Wanda Resort – North Face entrance (approx. 145 km): 2 hours (private vehicle) Yuehua – Daozhankou: 5 mins (park bus) Daozhankou – Celestial Lake: 20 mins (park bus) Celestial Lake – North Face entrance: 30 mins (park bus) *Depends on local situation (the weather/construction/traffic jam, etc…), may take longer

Leaving behind the West Face, head onwards with guide and driver to tackle the beauty of the North Face. Greeted by a large, western-style chalet (indicating the entrance to the park), the day’s exploration begins with an hour-long stroll through the Dell Forest. Korean Pines, tall birches, and a large variety of plants (including ginseng), set the scene for this mystical stroll.

Conclude the Dell walk at the Daozhankou crossroads, where a bus awaits to carry visitors onwards towards Yuehua Square. Splitting in two directions, one short path leads towards the Green Basin (at the heart of a forest of junipers) and the other towards the impressive 68-meter Changbaishan Waterfall.

Returning to the Daozhankou Crossroad, a small vehicle awaits to zigzag back towards the the Celestial Lake path. After a short (but steep) ascent, the edge of Changbaishan Crater awaits boasting views even more breathtaking than the day before. Return once more to Daozhankou.

From the central crossroads, take the 300-meter stroll to the Landscape Hotel to drop luggage and get situated. Conclude the day with a much-deserved well-being session, featuring tea tasting, saunas, a foot massage, Jacuzzis, and, above all, the chance to bathe in volcanic-fed outdoor hot springs. With an average year-round temperature between 40 and 60 degrees centigrade, these pools are the ideal way to rejuvenated tired, aching bones! With an enchanting riverside setting amidst nearby pine forests… the region is simply magical. For an even more unique experience, stay around until nightfall to enjoy the hotel’s lightshow.
