As the name suggests, one of the first sites you will see is Wat Phou. What is it anyway? What Phou is an ancient Khmer temple not too far away from Phu Kao Mountain. The site itself is believed to have originated from the 5th century and the remaining structures that you will see are from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. As with many other Khmer temples, Wat Phou was originally a Hindu temple that later changed to a Buddhist site of worship.
After a peaceful night on aboard followed by a hearty breakfast, head over to Sipandon. Yes, these are the 4000 islands. The concept of chill-out takes on a whole new meaning here. Bikes can be rented at just about anywhere, so no worries there. While you are down here, take the time to absorb the culture at the traditional Lao village of Ban Dua Tae.
