One, two, three…four thousand islands! Believe it or not, there’s a region in Laos that’s even more laid back than the rest of the country. By now, you must’ve heard about the 4000 Island archipelago in the Mekong in Southern Laos. Down there, the Lao natural scenery is emphasized even more. Motorized vehicles are at a premium here and beautiful waterfalls, green forests and the Mekong River are just mere steps away. So, come down to the Four Thousand Island archipelago (also known as Siphandon) and just float your problems away. Are there really four thousand islands? If you want, count them and tell us.
Arrive at Pakse, the hub for your Southern Laos travel. The town should also give you a glimpse of what’s to come, as it is a chilled out and relaxing place. From there, you’ll make your way to the Bolaven Plateau. What’s up there? The cascading waterfall of Tad Lo and Tad Fane, which itself is surrounded by lush scenery reminiscent of a beautiful scene from National Geographic. The plateau is also known to produce Laos’ best coffee. Waterfalls, nature, greenery and a cup of good coffee; not a bad combination, eh?
And now for a little cultural and historical excursion. Visit Wat Phou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with stunning architectural designs. This temple’s been around even before the Angkor Wat and may be a millennium old!
Now, head to Champassak and explore the French influence on this small Lao town. In the afternoon, enjoy an elephant ride up to Ban Kiet Ngong, a hillside village in Mount Asa which overlooks the biodiversity rich Xe Pian Protected Area. Now head to Khong Island, one of the 4000 Islands.
Now, let’s explore this intricate archipelago, shall we? First up are the peaceful islands of Done Det and Done Khone. Make sure not to fall in the trap of lazing around. The area is known to do that to people. Head for the Lippi Waterfalls, a local sacred site believed to trap bad spirits followed by the majestic Khone Papheng, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia. See the tranquil Mekong River give way to the seething, rapid surges as it fans out into the delta. Such a soothing place the 4000 Island archipelago is, isn’t it?
