Shan State merits its reputation as one of the major draws in Myanmar. The headline attraction in the area is Inle Lake, which is deserving of its fame, but the state also encompasses Kalaw, a charming hill station, Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp, famous caves at Pindaya and much more besides. Inle Lake provides the grand finale to the adventure. Its calm surface makes it heartbreakingly beautiful, while the protected area around the lake is a sanctuary for herons, warblers, cormorants, wild ducks and egrets. The human element of the Inle Lake area is also compelling. The stilt house villages; island-bound Buddhist temples and floating gardens on the lake are where the Intha people go about their daily lives. Off the lake, the beguiling countryside takes centre stage. The rolling landscapes are perfect for hiking and cycling.
