There is a lot of mystery behind the construction of Borobodur. Its purpose remains relatively unknown and even its construction date is shrouded in mystery. Judging from the reliefs and through other estimates, the temple was likely founded in 800AD and may have taken as long as 75 years to complete.
Borobudur is one of Indonesia’s most attractive sites. Imagine this, a massive andesine monument towering above its immediate surroundings and containing at least two million stone blocks! Now that is one huge structure!
The UNESCO World Heritage Site was meant to represent the existence of the universe and accurately reflects Buddhist cosmology. Here, you can literally ascend into heaven! How? Well, the base of the temple is square, symbolizing Earth’s impurity. As you move up, the stiffness starts to relax into circular rings, representing your rise into heaven. The path also ascends through three levels of Buddhist cosmology, namely Kamadhatu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formless meditation), with a system of stairways and corridors containing more than 1,400 relief panels. You will certainly leave the certainly an enlightened person in terms of Buddhist knowledge.
But wait, there is more! Not too far away is the Hindu temple of Prambanan. This is one of Southeast Asia’s largest Hindu complex and another amazing historical site. If you have seen Hindu temples before, then you will certainly recognize its tall and pointed architecture, a common trait in Hindu structures. Built in the 9th century, this collection of sharp, jagged temples features three main inner shrines dedicated to the Hindu trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. UNESCO named Prambanan a Heritage Site in 1991. Your guide will explain the history and symbolism of the temples as you walk around.
