The temples that scatter the plain around the ancient city are not the only remarkable aspect of Bagan. One of Myanmar’s main draws, Bagan, is one of the country’s most beguiling destinations. However, the otherworldly allure of its Buddhist relics is balanced by the more earthly craft of lacquerware for which Bagan is also famed. The country’s great forests have fed a near limitless supply of sap, which is then, in turn, used in the art of pan yun (Burmese lacquerware), known globally for its delicate intricacy. During this day-long itinerary, guests will have the opportunity to get fully acquainted with this fascinating process. The crash course takes place in Bagan’s oldest lacquerware shop where master craftsmen have been honing their expertise for centuries. After being talked through the process of creating a lacquerware piece, guests will have the opportunity to paint over designs sketched onto coasters by the craftsmen – enabling them to take their very own masterpiece away with them.
This experience is perfect for kids and adults alike, or those looking for an in-depth understanding of the craft’s long history.
“I thought of my daughter when we were developing this EXO Experience,” said Moet Moet Zaw, Assistant Product Manager and EXO Foundation Coordinator. “Visiting numerous temples can become tiring for kids so it’s nice to take a break, learn about the culture of Myanmar and have an interactive experience to keep them interested. At the end of the day they get the added benefit of taking home a truly unique souvenir.”
