There certainly isn’t a bigger, grander and more majestic one than Khone Phapeng Falls.
Ever wonder why the Mekong is considered impossible to navigate northwards? If you are down there in Southern Laos and looking at this natural wonder, then that is your answer right there. It is one of the most powerful waterfalls and is definitely the region’s largest in water volume. It is 21 meters high and is formed from three emerging cataracts merging into one powerful torrent. Little islets and rocks pop up from under the water as well. These are the formations of Siphandon, otherwise known as 400 islands.
If you are looking for the ever elusive and Giant Mekong Catfish, then you stand the best chance of finding it here. Want to know how big they can get? Try three meters in length and 300 kilograms in weight! That’s one big fish! You would know if you see one coming, that’s for sure.
And you might have guessed it by now, Khone Phapeng Falls is a great place to relax and unwind. Surrounding the waterfall is the ever so famous green wilderness as well as lakes which lead to the pool and cataract. Good spot for a picnic lunch? You bet! If you don’t have any food with you feel free to pick some up from the vendors and food stalls nearby. In addition, handicraft artisans have set up shops around the area, promoting traditional Lao products to the masses.
