Did you know Bagan was once the capital of Burma? Well, the fact may not surprise you that much since Burmese capitals move pretty much when a there is a new person in power. But did you also know that Bagan has the most Buddhist temples, pagodas and stupas in the world? And most of which were built between the 11th and 12th centuries?
During that time, Bagan became a center for Buddhist studies and attracted people from all over, even as far as India and Sri Lanka. The city was sacked by the Mongols in 1287 but continued to flourish as a place of Buddhist scholarship.
The city’s location in Myanmar’s Central Plains along the Irrawaddy River makes for a truly picturesque opportunity. Come in the morning and have the added fog and mist create a special effect camera shot. Try exploring Bagan by balloon! It’s breathtaking, for a lack of a better description.
