We all like to ‘do our bit’ for the planet and there’s no better way than traveling in a more environmental and sustainable way. To help we’ve come up with our favorite eco-orientated hotels from across Asia to get you started….
1. Bangkok Tree House, Thailand
Perched beside the river just outside of urban Bangkok is Bangkok Tree House where guests sleep in trees, shower in solar heated water and eat organic food grown on site. The hotel miraculously combines a boundary pushing approach to environmental hospitality whilst offering a sleek and stylish experience. This is not for everyone though; they don’t claim to be bug free.
2. Missol Resort, Indonesia
Located in the southern Raja Ampat in Indonesia, this private dive island is part of an uninhabited archipelago and is amazingly located within a Manta Sanctuary. The Robinson Crusoe style overwater bungalows are glorious and overlook a crystal clear ocean. Their own conservation center is a registered charity and the work is far reaching, including reef restoration, building local schools and challenging legislation. What’s more, almost all of the employees are from nearby islands, contributing hugely to the local economy.
3. Song Saa, Cambodia
Song Saa is one of Southeast Asia’s most luxurious and indulgent private islands, but fortunately they have strong sustainability principles and invest heavily in the local environment. The owners, Rory and Melita Hunter, have established Cambodia’s first marine reserve, a ground breaking solid waste management system, a center dedicated to sustainability and training, as well as an internship program. This is a perfect option for those with large budgets and a good conscience.
4. The Menjangan, Indonesia
This simple but elegant hideaway finds its home within Bali Barat National Park. Rooms are nestled within the forest, on the beach and on cliff tops overlooking the ocean. The atmosphere is casual and focuses on unwinding and relaxing amidst nature. There’s 175 plant species just within the park.
5. Kingfisher Eco-Lodge, Laos
Kingfisher Eco Lodge is a pioneering and tranquil hideaway in Champasak Province in southern Laos. It provides simple and comfortable stilted bungalows overlooking Beung Kiat Ngkong Wetlands, home to a large variety of birds and small mammals. Water is solar powered, and all food served is organic.
6. URBN, China
One of Shanghai’s hippest boutique hotels which has been stylishly restored, it was once a factory warehouse in downtown Shanghai and has been, almost completely, built out of recycled materials. Located close to a plethora of shops, restaurants and the famous French concession area, this sleek hotel is not only sustainable, but it also is one of the most conveniently located options in the city.
7. View Point Eco Lodge, Myanmar
Snuggled in between rice paddies and a large tributary between Inle Lake and Nyaung Shwe is View Point Eco Lodge. Famed for its inspiring cuisine but also the beautifully crafted stilted water bungalows made completely from limestone, wood, mud and straw – all local materials.
