Climb aboard an open-air US Army jeep and depart from Danang’s coast into the highlands. Stop first at a 1000 years old Cham Temple which remains intact despite the ravage of time. Then reach the strategic spot of Hilltop 55 to learn its role during the American-Vietnam war. Head onto Da Nang, the fastest growing city in Vietnam.
The road first passes by numerous coves populated with picturesque fishing villages and basket boats. Then begin the climb along the steep slopes of the Son Tra Peninsula, also known as Monkey Mountain. This road juts out over the coast and at each switchback offers a new, breath-taking view. From this vantage point Danang, My Khe, the Truong Son Mountains and even Hai Van Pass can be seen. Stop often for photos from these remarkable viewpoints.
At 696 metres high, stop for a picnic lunch and enjoy panoramic views of the area. Soak it all in – this is one incredible picnic spot!
From here descend along the other side of the mountain to see Vietnam’s biggest Buddha statue and down toward the fishing villages where the colorful wooden boats are moored along the coast.
The adventure slowly comes to an end with a final stop at the Marble Mountains where a short climb rewards you with another panoramic view and arrive at the hotel late in the afternoon. (L)
