The adventure begins after breakfast with a 1.5-hour drive to Lampang. Founded in the 7th century, Lampang is a great starting point for this day of historical discovery. Visit Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao, a beautiful pagoda that housed Thailand’s most famous Emerald Buddha image for more than thirty years. Continue around the town, seeing the remains of the 19th-century city walls and learning about the years when Lampang prospered as a teak trading centre.
After a lunch break, continue exploring Lampang with a visit to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang. This is the city’s most important temple and one of the best examples of Lanna architecture. Admire the temple’s intricate carvings and study the incredible mural paintings. Be sure to pause and enjoy the views from this hilltop site.
Continue onwards to Lamphun, another of Thailand’s oldest cities, dating back to 700 AD. Start with a visit to Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, a classic example of northern religious architecture. This is one of Thailand’s most revered and ancient temples, containing a holy relic of the Lord Buddha. Join the local pilgrims who come to pay homage at this holy site. Before departing Lamphun, stop by Wat Jamathewi which contains the ashes of Queen Jamathewi, Lamphun’s first ruler.
Then take the scenic drive back to Chiang Mai, armed with a great appreciate for Thailand’s rich ancient history. (L)
