Born in 1928, Mr Lee has been making Joss Sticks for over 70 years. One of the last traditional Joss stick makers and perhaps one of the most well-known person who is still in the trade. Making Joss sticks since he left school he continues this dying trade. Spend 2.5-3 hours as Mr Lee shows you the techniques of rolling joss sticks and be rewarded with a selection of Sandalwood joss sticks to take home as well as the knowledge of this dying trade. The Joss Sticks are made from 100% natural materials and no chemicals, a rarity today as many are mass produced in factories.
Learn about his life as a Joss Stick Maker and stories of post war Penang. Finish the workshop and take a short walk to the Goddess of Mercy Temple, a Taoist temple where you will see the Joss Sticks in action. Situated in Pitt Street it was built in 1728, making it Penang’s oldest Taoist Temple. Walk back to the hotel for 12:30 or continue the explorations of Georgetown’s cobbled streets and whimsical street art, keeping an eye out for more of Penang’s traditional trades.
