Phôngsali toen is the capital of the Province and the highest city in Laos PDR at 1,400 meters above sea level. Located between Yunnan (China), and Điện Biên Province in Vietnam, most travellers get a feeling of “no longer being in Laos, not yet having reached China”.

Up there the climate is pleasant and refreshing covering the endless mountains down to the canyon of the Nam Ou River, biggest tributary of the Mekong. The population is made up of officially 28 different ethnic groups, of which the majority being Khmu, Phou Noy, different Akha, Tai Lue and Hor, each with their own culture, traditions, costumes, and languages.

Exploring Phongsaly Town
- Half Day
Wake up early to visit the local morning market, where different ethnic groups of Phongsaly meet and shop. Enjoy a local breakfast in the Old town, followed by a walk to explore this interesting corner of Phongsaly town.

The Old Quarter is characterized by the rock paved narrow roads and lanes and Yunnanese wooden architecture. Most of the quarter’s residents are descendants of Yunna traders. Until the 1970s, there was a Chinese consulate in Phongsaly town, now the Phou Fa Hotel.

Next, head to the Phongsaly Ethnology Museum to learn about the amazing ethnic diversity of this northernmost province of Laos (note: closed Saturday and Sunday). Phongsaly is home to 28 ethnic groups and sub-groups. Each has their own traditional clothing, way of life and traditions.

After that go for a walk up the 822 steps up Phou Fa (Sky Mountain) for a panoramic sunset and views over the city. You will really feel like you are at the top of the world. (B)
