Discover some of the coolest aspects of modern Japan. Start with a Manga experience, learning its history and how to draw the classic cartoons before discovering some of Tokyo's most famous manga and anime areas. Top the day off with monster and maid cafes, and a visit to the iconic Akihabara district.
MEALS [ L ]
Begin the day with a class at a Japanese school in Central Nakano, learning not just the history of manga but also the unique style of drawing the world-known Japanese cartoon.
Afterwards, visit Nakano Broadway, a four-level shopping mall purely dedicated to manga and anime. Most of the goods sold here are related to the golden era of Japan's manga and anime industry, featuring some of the famous '70s characters such as Astroboy and UFO Robot Grendizer.
From Nakano, travel by train to Harajuku and explore Takeshita Street, an area in Tokyo that is popular among the youth representing the latest fashion trends. Harajuku Takeshita Street is without a doubt the centre of the kawaii ("cute") culture in Tokyo. With a stroke of luck, catch a glimpse of 'cosplayers' or teenagers showing off their unique fashion styles.
Just around the area is the fascinating Kawai Monster Cafe. This themed restaurant feels more like an amusement park rather than a dining area and is probably the most colourful cafe-restaurant in Japan. Enter the stomach of a monster and taste strange-looking but delicious meals and pastries while watching a show that features the staff of the restaurant.
Later in the day, explore the quirkier side of Japan by visiting Akihabara, the district in Tokyo famous for its hundreds of electronics shops, and more recently, for being the centre of Tokyo's anime, manga, video game, and figurine culture. Explore the inner streets of Akihabara, which most mainstream tourists don't usually see.
End today's tour in one of the unique Japanese Maid Cafes, where waitresses address their customers as go-shujin-sama ("Master") or o-hime-sama ("Princess"). This is the time to rest those tired feet, enjoy a serving of kawaii drink, and take a photo with one of the cute Maids.
