Cycling on the backroads, through the exotic countryside of northwest, Siem Reap provides an opportunity to savour local life and culture, including pastoral countryside, an 11th century temple where a monk offers insight on Buddhism, and a boat ride to an Angkor-era temple at the center of an ancient reservoir.
MEALS [ L ]
After a short ride on the bikes, stop and walk up the steps of the 11th century Wat Svay Romeat Pagoda. Meet with a local monk who shares his insight on Buddhism by explaining more about the function of the Pagoda within the community (through the translation of an English-speaking guide). Buddhist monks will provide a private blessing ceremony for good health and a safe journey – a very special experience.
Next, ride along a dirt road that skirts the edge of the West Baray, the largest artificial reservoir built in the Angkor era. Travel by boat to the West Mebon, a temple built to honor royal ancestors on an island in the centre of the lake. The temple is currently under restoration and is seldom visited by tourists. Return to the dock and enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch in a local kiosk with the option of swimming in the baray. (Note: there are Western bathrooms available near the boat dock to change in/out of swimwear.)
After lunch, ride through pastoral countryside to a small village where a local family produces a local delicacy. Sample fresh krolan: sticky rice, coconut milk, and green bean grilled in bamboo by traditional methods. A delicious snack! Continue by bicycle back to Wat Svay Romeat and return by van to the hotel. (L)
(Note: In the dry season the West Mebon ruins are accessible by land; in rainy season, the waters of the 7,800-metre-long baray rise and the temple, located on a site higher than the baray's floor, becomes an island.)
