The kingdom of Angkor once extended from the South China Sea in present day Vietnam to the mountains bordering modern-day Myanmar. Escape the crowds of the Angkor Archaeological Park to visit one of the largest cities built by the kings of Angkor, the impressive ruins of the Banteay Chhmar temple complex, located near the border of Thailand. Thanks to new roads, it’s easier than ever to visit Banteay Chhmar but few are still doing it: enjoy driving through picturesque countryside and experiencing the solitude of these beautiful temples before the tour busses discover it!
MEALS [ L ]
Explore the ruins of the innermost enclosure for an hour. The temple is largely in ruins but features some fascinating carvings unlike any others found elsewhere in Cambodia and the surrounding forest creates a tranquil setting that will be largely yours to enjoy as very few visitors make the journey to this remote complex. After enjoying lunch at the community-based tourism center, drive around to Samnang temple to the rear of the main complex and then visit a local silk weaving center. Before departing back to Siem Reap, visit Banteay Torp, whose precariously balanced stones appear as giant towers. (L)
