MEALS [ L ]
Kick off this morning hopping on a local songtaew, the city’s famous mode of public transport, towards the old town of Chiang Mai. Pay a visit to the Lanna Folklife Museum. Located inside a restored colonial building, the museum showcases the rich heritage of Northern Thailand and provides further insight into the history of Chiang Mai. After spending time at the museum up to hour, take a short rickshaw ride through a small alley leading to a local community. Hidden quietly in the old town of Chiang Mai, “Puak Taem Community is a local heritage village well-known for the ancient Lanna craft or called “Kua Tong” in Thai. Kua Tong is a brass ornament, mainly used for temple decoration, and it is usually made as a many-tiered umbrella for the temple but can be handcrafted in other designs.
Once off the rickshaw, visit the community temple, “Wat Puak Taem”, one of the oldest temples in Chiang Mai. Here, meet a local craftsman or “Sla” in northern dialect working on Kua Tong. Observe how each design of Kua Tong has been patterned and produced. Visit the community museum and learn more about the history of such preserved craft as well as any brass cultural objects mostly used in any Lanna-style ceremony and decoration.
Following the morning visits, have a delicious bowl of khao soi at a local restaurant in the neighbourhood. Khao soi is Chiang Mai’s famous dish with a combination of crispy noodle and coconut curry sauce. After lunch, wander through the community and learn more about Lanna heritage. Say hello to another local, a Sla, who produces brass long fingers and brass swinging flowers, used for the Finger Nail Dance, aka “Fon Leb” in Thai - the gracious and elegant northern Lanna style performance. Watch and learn how the crafts work has been appreciated and delicately made. If time allows, visit a local family who threads and weaves the bamboo for household decoration. Have a chance to take part in any activities if you wish.
Complete the day with an afternoon tea or coffee at a local vintage café in the community before returning to the hotel by private air-conditioned transfer. (L)
