If you happen to stay in the capital of Bangkok, you’d be happy to know that you will not have to travel far in order to reach one of Thailand’s favorite islands. Just about 200 kilometers from the big city in the Gulf of Thailand lies Koh Samed, affectionately known as Magic Crystal Island to some. This undisturbed sanctuary is calling out for you, aka the Bangkok resident yearning for some downtime in a relaxing and laid back beach environment.
There’s one thing that grows in abundance in Koh Samed; the cajeput tree. Because of that, the island is named after it. Fitting, isn’t it? In terms of size, Koh Samed is not very big at all. Its T-shaped borders measures at around 13 square kilometers.
If you are looking to escape the rain that pours down upon much of Thailand during the months of May to October, then Koh Samed is your best bet. The island gets much less rainfall than the mainland, even though it is separated from Rayong Province by just a couple kilometers. The island’s rainy season only lasts from May to July, but even during this season it has less rain than most of Thailand. This makes the island somewhat arid, but despite that, is still filled with vegetation ranging from lush forested hills, evergreen and deciduous forests and of course cajeput trees.
For many, the island is seen as a quieter alternative to the southern islands. That is Koh Samed’s charm. Just because it is more subdued than its counterpart does not mean there isn’t anything to do. Of course, lying down on the sandy beaches and absorbing the sun is an option, but you can always opt for more active endeavors. Since you are at the beach, you might as well take a dip in the warm waters. Snorkelers and divers are in for a treat as some fine spots are available just outside of the island’s shores. Get ready for colorful corals and marine life such as turtles, tiger sharks and manta rays. Boat trips to nearby islands can also be arranged as well as fishing, even at night. And don’t forget the always tasty, zesty and spicy (at your discretion of course) seafood that will surely get your tongue tingling.
If you are in Bangkok and need a break from the bustle of the big city, then a trip to Koh Samed comes highly recommended. If you need other options out of the capital, then our Thailand tours listings should definitely inspire you.
